A Tribute to
the Spirit of the Renaissance

freedom of speech l liberty l democracy l solidarity l spirituality

In the summer of 1982, after moving away from an absurdist & nihilist world view, this work set off as a series of lucid daydreams. Participating in the imaginal world of this open, luminous space-of-all-possibilities is the visionary root of creativity. Not needing to travel far to be refreshed. Divorced from the visionary, philosophy and science are barren. Behind the visible, dark matter lurks.

When space is closed and stuffed up by useless & dogmatic ideas, the open air of a total change of view is welcomed, for hardly available. To remain free one must, at daybreak, become a beginner, and this again & again. Thus ongoingly reborn, the free thinker cannot be subjected to dogma, nor to blind, unjustified belief. Authorities, reason nor the senses are to be trusted. Although the Sun seems to rise & set, it does not. Although the disk of the Hunter's Moon may seem larger, it is not. Reason is valid & unmistaken, but its monsters are not. The spectre of independent existence led both Platonists & Peripatetics to identify objects and not the space between them. This revelation here contradicts that revelation there. There is no end to it, except ad hoc. Beginning anew is opening up, witnessing the intervals, not the objects.

Accept your own experience, solicit your own thinking and elicit your own judgment. If doing so your world becomes a hell, then at least it is your own. So will be your effort to get out of it. And getting out of it You will, for nothing permanent can be found.

Thinking itself is not safe. Wrong thinking leads to wrong actions and their effects. Logical thinking, although valid, may be mistaken. Scientific thinking is relative & fallible. Personal thinking is always biased. Collective thinking is always reductive. A majority can also err. Although most people think sensate & mental objects exist as independent substances, logic shows this cannot be the case. It is the Earth's spin which causes the hours, but nobody feels it turn. Neither do we regularly contemplate the Moon, the Sun, the Solar system, the Milky Way with its 100 billion stars or the universe with its 100 billion galaxies. Like ants, we crawl in the dust.

To ever seek wisdom, protecting the validity of convention while proclaiming its mistake, is difficult. One tends to succumb to social pressure and acquiesce. At the turn of Saturn, things "get serious" and with the appearance of the first white hairs, worldly concerns are needed to pale bitter death. At this juncture, total crisis is invoked ! Commoners move near the precipice. The wise live their lives on the edge.

Although an absolute object must be thought and can be found, this "return of God" is to be monitored. Even if the theist "God" would exist as His revelations affirm, history shows how unfit humans are to satisfy Him. Even a non-existing "God" poses a problem, for only "God" can handle "God" and the human is caught in-between. The absolute is not a substance to be reified in terms of a brontosaurus or the idea of a brontosaurus. In theist logic, it cannot be a super-object, nor a super-subject.

A peaceful mind and a good heart bind all religions. As there is no coercion in religion, political issues and spiritual matters are to be kept strictly divided and so cannot be united in one person or in one office. To do so brings harm to the cause of humanity : planetary participationism, an integrated, globalized & caring democracy of nations.

Education should be at the heart of any civilization. The young are the true capital of any nation. To teach them how to stand on their own two feet with an open mind and a compassionate heart, is the best strategy to generate peace & happiness for all sentient beings. A just & caring world order is the intent.

The Renaissance is not a past event, but a recurring state of mind induced by invoking its spirit. The masters of Renaissance art, philosophy & science are examples of its power & creativity, bringing renewal, liberation & enlightenment.
